Career and Courses in Leather Technology

Leather technology is a field for those with creative designing and artistic skills. The Indian leather industry is growing fast and finding a career will not be difficult for the candidates with right educational qualifications and aptitude.
There are a number of courses in Leather Technology ranging from certificate course to M.Tech. The bachelor level courses will include analytical chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology, leather processing, CAD etc and a background in Chemistry will be beneficial.

Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai, The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi and Government Leather Institute, Agra are the prominent institutes that offer various courses in leather technology. Many universities and colleges in India also offer courses in leather technology.

CLRI Chennai
B.Tech (Leather Technology) (in collaboration with Anna University, Chennai)

Eligibility: 10+2 (School Higher Secondary course)  with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
4 Years (8 Semesters)

B.Tech. (Leather Technology) (Part Time)  (in collaboration with Anna University, Chennai)
Eligibility: Diploma in Leather Technology
3½ years (7 Semesters)

M.Tech.(Leather Technology) (in collaboration with Anna University, Chennai)
Eligibility:B.Tech (Leather Technology) 
2 years (4 Semesters)
M.Tech (Footwear Science & Engineering) (in collaboration with Anna University, Chennai)
Eligibility: B. Tech (Leather Technology) or B.E. (Mechanical Engineering)

Diploma Programme in Leather Garments: 50% in 10+2 or Equivalent Examination
Diploma Programme in Footwear: 50% in 10+2 or Equivalent Examination
There are many tailor made short term courses ranging from 2-8 weeks for those working in the industry.


National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)
 Bachelor of Design (Leather Design)
The +2 level examination in the 10+2 pattern of examination of any recognized Central/
State Board of Secondary Examination, such as Central Board of Secondary Education /
State Board New Delhi, and Council for Indian School of Certificate Examination, New Delhi.
or
General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri-Lanka) at the
Advanced (A) level/ International Baccalaureate (IB).
or
Any Public School/Board/University Examination in India or in foreign countries recognized
by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to 10+2 system.
or
A pass grade in the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open
School with a minimum of five subjects.
or
3 or 4-years diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education.
Admission is through a Paper Based Test (PBT).
